This album begins with an original suite of music by David Gleason entitled "Old Calabria." This suite was inspired by a painting of a lone rustic house sitting among the arid foothills of the Aspromonte. It’s imbued with the Calabraise concept of la miseria, or privation blended with culture, resourcefulness, and courage. The second movement recalls the difficulties of those Italians who experienced the calamitous decline of the hill towns of the Mezzogiorno. As their populations emigrated, these millenia-old villages were all but abandoned. Only empty piazzas, homes and churches remain in the shadow of the mountains. It concludes with a movement that gives thanks to the elders for their struggles, sacrifices, and determination to improve the quality of life for future generations. The album continues with a new rendition of "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The final selection is a rendition of Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss."
